This book gave me a different perspective on World War II. Before I get into the why, I want to say that I am no expert in writing or anything like that. I just really enjoy reading books and want to share that with you all. Okay, now that we have all of that out of the way, let me tell you why I really enjoyed The Tattooist of Auschwitz.
Book Review: The Tattooist of Auschwitz
The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a historical fiction novel that was written by Heather Morris and published in the United States by HarperCollins in September 2018. This novel is based on the true story of Lale and Gita. It is a love story that as you can guess, beats all the odds. However, what captivated me from this book was not the love story. I was captivated by the fact that jews were assigned all kinds of different jobs and different ranks.
I grew up here in the US. So we covered World War II a lot in school. I knew what happened and how many innocent people lost their lives, but I didn’t know all the different jobs they held while being in prisoned. I grew up seeing, in movies, and knowing that Jews were in prisoned and they had to work really hard labor. I knew they slept in horrible conditions, and multiple people would sleep on the same bunk. I knew women and men were separated, and all that. I had never considered that Jews would also be assigned to jobs were they didn’t have to work so physically hard. I never considered the ranks there could be at the concentration camps, depending on when they arrived and what job they were given.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz is way more than a love story. There were so many moments I had to put the book down just because I was not emotionally ready to to keep reading what was going to happen next. There are some characters that would grow on you and there were characters you just really disliked.
The book, overall is an easy read. The only thing I did not like about the book is there were moments that were built up so well, and then the resolution was glazed over. There were some moments I wanted to know more. The characters go through SO much, I wanted to know how they felt once that problem was resolved. I wouldn’t mind if this book was double the size. I wanted more. One of the biggest things I loved about the book was that the author included pictures at the end of the book of Lale and Gita. She also writes what happened after the books story ends. She lets you know what happend to Lale and Gita after. It is the perfect ending to the love story of Lale and Gita.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes romance and history. This book reminded me that what is meant to be will always be. What is for you will be for you. I reminded me that kindness, honor, love, respect and being sure of who you are will bring you good. Sad I am done with this book, I can see myself rereading this book. Than you Lale for sharing your story and for sharing Gita with us.
