To say that I am on a reading kick is an understatement. I recently finished reading The Tattooist of Auschwitz, you can read my thoughts here. Recently, I decided I needed to read a Thriller/ Horror Fiction, to get in the mood for October. Well I somehow came to the conclusion that It by Stephen King would do the trick. Before I start and get into my thoughts I just knew that It contained a killer clown, and that is it. I had not seen the movies or shows, that changed after I read the book. The most important thing I learned was that IT was not the clown; Pennywise was the clown.
I really like going into books without knowing much or anything about the plot. So I was really excited to get into this one. I was so into this book, I read it in a week. Probably the main reason I was able to read it that fast was because I got sick. I got a cold and was out of commission for the week. There is so much I want to say about this book, I want to start with a Like and Dislike list.
It, Stephen King
| Like | Dislike |
| Different character perspectives | The LONG Tangents – some tangents are so long, |
| The writing – easy to read, very detailed, really taps into your emotions | Not too much perspective from It or Pennywise |
| The plot is not too extravagant, it is enough for you to | Not as scary or creepy as I was expecting it to be |
| How things tie in so seamlessly at the end | |
| The Turtle |
Those are some of my likes and dislikes. If I am learning anything from writing these book reviews is I need to start writing notes while I am reading. I get to the end of the book, and I forget all the thoughts I had. Oops, beginner here.
One of the biggest things that stood out to me was the tangents. I have read Stephen King books in the past, but I hadn’t encountered extremely long tangents. I posted my journey reading this book on Instagram, and I had a lot of people comment that they have not finished reading the book because of the tangents. What I did LOVE about the book was how at the end everything tied together. Although the tangents were long, they made sense eventually.

Hi Oh Silver, AWAY!
As mentioned in the intro, all I knew about the book was that there was a killer clown. So I realized, as I was like half way through the book, that I was expecting to get a perspective from Pennywise as well. It is more of a spiritual thing/feeling, so I was expecting to get an insight into Pennywise and what he was feeling and why he was doing these things. Spoiler Alert: it never happened.
The writing was amazing. The way King describes things makes you feel like you are actually there seeing what the characters are seeing and smelling what they are smelling. I also really liked how he tied in the past with the present. You understood why the characters thought and acted the way they did.

The only thing I wasn’t a fan of and if you google “how do the kids defeat pennywise” you’ll find out what I am referring to. I am not the only one who was so confused as to how this was a thing that defeated pennywise. I mean overall it makes sense in a way to the plot of the book, but it could have made sense to not be that. I am thankful that in the movies the plot was changed and this act was not in the movie. Overall, I highly recommend this book. it is a long book and the tangents are long, but I promise they make sense when the time is right. I would not consider this a scary book, just like I would not consider the movies, scary movies. It is more of a thriller.
